Paper wasps, mud daubers, yellowjackets, hornets, and Africanized honey bees all build nests on or around homes — and all will defend them aggressively.

Subject Profile

  • Paper wasps: open-comb umbrella nests under eaves.
  • Yellowjackets: ground nests or wall void nests, very aggressive.
  • Bald-faced hornets: large gray football-shaped aerial nests.
  • Africanized honey bees: highly defensive, mass-attack response.

Habitat

  • Eaves, soffits, attic vents, BBQ grills, playsets.
  • Wall voids and abandoned rodent burrows.
  • Sheds, fence posts, storage boxes.

Behavior

  • Colony grows all summer, peaks in late August / September.
  • Defend nests within 10–20 ft, sometimes much further.
  • Yellowjackets become more aggressive in fall as food drops.
